“Chuan” in Traditional Chinese | MOST Common

00:00-01:14 This is a continuation of my series “What a Character!” where I introduce traditional Chinese characters in alphabetical order according to the Pinyin romanization system. First we review "chu." Today’s video is about all of the common traditional characters of the sound form “chuan” in all four tones.

01:15- 01:58 Introduction to the sound form "chuan."

01:59 - 02:45 川 1st tone, "river" is just three downward parallel strokes like a river and its two banks.

02:46- 03:26 穿 1st tone, "penetrate, cross, or wear" It is a radical for "cave" over "tooth." The simplified is the same.

03:27- 04:47 傳2nd tone, "pass, transmit" or if pronounced "Zhuan (4)" "biography." There is a "ren(2)" radical on the left. On the right you seem to be making "che(1)" (vehicle) but with and small extra stroke on the right. Below that is "cun(4)" (the inch component).

04:47- 05:31 船2nd tone "boat" has a "boat" radical on the left, next to a "table" over the "mouth" components. It bears a likeness to "ban" (a sort, a kind).

05:32- 06:40 喘3rd tone, "pant, gasp for air" has the "mouth" radical with the "mountain" over "er(2)" meaning "and" on the right. It is the same in simplified.

06:41- 07:09 串4th tone "string of, connect" looks like a "Zhong" (middle) on another "Zhong" joined by a single downstroke "gun(3)." This character is also the same in simplified Chinese.

07:10- 07:18 "Chuang" will be next up!
