As every Australian knows, the Gallipoli campaign was a failed military effort by the Allied forces (including Britain, Australia, and New Zealand) from April 1915 to January 1916 to capture the Ottoman Empire's capital, Constantinople.
The campaign began with a naval attempt to force a passage through the Dardanelles strait, but Allied warships were repulsed by Turkish defences and mines.
As a follow-up, landings at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915 were undertaken but met strong Turkish resistance. The battles became a brutal stalemate - neither side gained significant ground and the was a high number of casualties for both the Allies and the Ottoman forces. Throughout the campaign, Australia alone suffered over 8,000 deaths out of about 50,000 personnel.
The campaign ended in a successful, albeit costly, withdrawal and evacuation of Allied forces.
Each year, 25 April holds significant importance in Australia and New Zealand, where the traits of bravery and mateship of soldiers seen at Gallipoli are remembered as foundational to our national character.
