In the early winter months of 2010, we left Manchester and headed for Gothenburg in Sweden to finish the album. We were in need of some perspective and the home of our collaborator and producer Jonas Quant seemed like a good place to go. In lieu of having a studio and armed with some record label money, we decided to hire a disused Swedish National Radio building on the outskirts of town. Jonas called it ‘Pellerin’. He never really said why but I just looked and it’s an old French word for pilgrim. Appropriate! Charged by the energy of having finished writing the album, we boarded the plane confident of finally piecing everything together. We arrived to temperatures of -20°C and a huge industrial building without much daylight. Needless to say things took a turn. Sleepless nights trapped indoors and waking hours fighting off the cold. Why didn’t we go to Italy? Still, we steeled ourselves and fought hard to try and accept the madness. This was it. There was work to be done.
Looking back at the footage, I can see how driven we were but also how confused and innocent. This was less than a year after we’d been unemployed and close to giving up. Our lives had turned completely upside down. I took my video camera for fun really. There wasn’t a particular purpose for filming. We were lost in the music and teetering on the edge of sanity. This obviously led to a strange collection of footage. Crucial moments missed, a few flickers of magic and countless empty minutes of nothing in particular. Watching the videos now, I feel so proud and amazed. It all seems so instinctive and raw. Don’t get me wrong, we also look absolutely wrecked at some points. We were confident and overflowing with dreams. That’s all that seemed to matter.
