Over the past 48 years I've been fortunate to have made six trips to Africa, all of them have been predominantly railway related. With every trip being an adventure in its own right, the great days have far exceeded the bad.
So, it could be considered a bold statement to suggest that the 26th July 2024 ranks high on the list of great days!
It began slowly enough with us waiting for steam to be raised for an hour or two at Marseilles before we headed off for Modderpoort. After coaling the locomotive there, it was relatively late in the afternoon when we departed for Ficksburg in beautiful winter afternoon light.
This day encompassed the trials and tribulations of the whole tour and built slowly towards a climax that brought with it a sense of gratitude and relief.
In Africa it's all about the 'vibe' and this day was full of it! To understand what I mean, you really need to watch the whole series of videos in chronological order. And there's still one more to come...
'Vibe' doesn't equal 'perfection'. My videos certainly aren't perfect and neither is Africa (or South Africa in this instance), however, it is beautiful, confronting, frustrating, happy, scary, welcoming, enlightening and, predominantly, fun, especially when you 'open your eyes' and 'Take it all In'.
