Test for carboxylic functional group (Batch-boys) | DrRajnishChem

(1) Litmus Test:
The carboxylic acid turns blue litmus paper to red. Because the carboxylic group -COOH present in compound is acidic in nature.

(2) Sodium Bicarbonate Test:
When carboxylic acid reacts with sodium bicarbonate solution odourless and colourless carb
on dioxide gas is evolved with a brisk effervescence along with sodium salt of carboxylic acid is formed.

(3) Ester Test:
Carboxylic acid reacts with alcohol in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid and forms a pleasant smelling (fruit smell) ester. This reaction is known as esterification.
