The Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra) is one of the most profound teachings on emptiness and wisdom (prajñāpāramitā) in Mahayana Buddhism. It presents a series of dialogues between the Buddha and Subhūti, revealing the nature of reality and the path to liberation.
This scripture is especially known for its paradoxical wisdom, guiding practitioners beyond conceptual thinking toward direct realization.
Teachings from Mingyur Rinpoche
As part of this special event, we will share a recorded teaching from Mingyur Rinpoche, originally presented for Tergar Institute’s Prajñāpāramitā advanced module. In this teaching, Rinpoche offers profound insights into the Diamond Sutra, illuminating its wisdom with clarity and depth. This selection provides a strong foundation for the oral transmission, commentary, and guided meditation that follow.
What is Lung (Oral Transmission)?
In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Lung (Tib. ལུང) ་refers to the oral transmission of a sacred text by an authorized teacher. This transmission is considered essential for receiving the blessings and lineage connection of a text.
Receiving the Lung for the Diamond Sutra means entering into its living tradition, allowing the teachings to take root in one's mindstream.
Diamond Sutra & Prajñāpāramitā
The Diamond Sutra is part of the Prajñāpāramitā (Perfection of Wisdom) scriptures, a central teaching in Mahayana Buddhism that explores the nature of emptiness and transcendent wisdom. Within this tradition, the Diamond Sutra is deeply connected to the broader Prajñāpāramitā corpus, which includes texts such as the Heart Sutra and the extensive 100,000-Verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra. These scriptures provide a profound foundation for understanding non-conceptual wisdom, guiding practitioners beyond ordinary perception toward the direct realization of emptiness.
