Forceps are metallic instruments used to provide traction, rotation or both to the fetal head. The indications of forceps delivery include delay in second stage of labor, fetal distress, maternal distress, after coming head of breech. The types of forceps include piper forceps, the rotational and non –rotational forceps. The different parts of forceps include the right and left blades, the shank, the lock. The prerequisites before applying forceps include informed written consent, adequate facilities and appropriate examination. After application of forceps the post-operative care is provided in the form of thromboprophylaxis, adequate analgesia etc.
