One of the most expensive shows of its time, 'Miami Vice' (1984), with its glitzy photography, trend-setting fashions, and fast-paced action, cracked the top ten in its second year. Filmed on location, with real Miami police as advisors and occasional players, the show ran for five seasons, though ratings declined in the last two. The program won four Emmys, including one for Edward James Olmos. It was one of the first series in stereo sound, enhancing the scores which were peppered with pop songs (costing up to $10,000 each for the rights). The 'Miami Vice' theme was by Jan Hammer, a former pianist for the Mahavishnu Orchestra; it brought him two Grammys, with the show's soundtrack album hitting #1 on Billboard and selling over four million copies.
