You see, in 1990 something interesting happened. The word sympathy stopped appearing in literature as much, and it was replaced with empathy. At first glance, this doesn't seem like it matters much.
But, oh, it does. It really does.
Empathy means that you literally feel what someone else is going through.
Sympathy means you feel pity for someone else's misfortunes.
This means that if you're being told you need to feel empathy for a person or group of people who are going through something you've never experienced, you're severely damaging your psyche.
On the contrary, if you're only giving sympathy to someone who's going through something you've personally experienced, healed from and can therefore help them – you're doing them and yourself a disservice by not giving them empathy.
In this video, I break down the difference to give you a better understanding of whether empathy or sympathy is a better choice in any given situation you may find yourself in.
Thanks for watching,
Jay
