A day came when in 2016, after caring for a pond for two years, black hair algae arrived on mass. I was soo shocked, but as it turned out it was actually saving the fish from dying from Ammonia.
After much research and talking to a professor and Griffith University her on the Gold Coast, I found out that this algae was feeding on Ammonia. I have heard that other algae feed on a variety of nutrient.
So, now I knew that then I needed to find something that would do its job, and it turns out that that is Zeolite.
Researching Zeolite it turns out not all Zeolites are the same and some are even synthetic! Fortunately my investigations led me to the natural kind that I finally found in Bunnings. Honestly, I should buy shares in that place, I go there soo often.
Anyway, I then picked up stockings (tights) that were thick enough that the fabric could hold the weight and not allow the product to fall through it. I then placed the "sausages" of Zeolite into the filter box, and within one week all the black hair algae was gone! Amazing! I have been using Zeolite in every pond that has a lot of fish.
I have also found that has helped me with string algae. I know when the Zeolite has to be renewed because the string algae starts to grow again. I never get rid of all of the algae in the ponds, as I have soo many creatures living off it, but I do try to clam it do, so it is presentable.
Photo of the Rainbow fish came from the University of Melbourne website and was by M. Hammer. I live in Zone 11a, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
