In this video, I'm learning to care for and embrace my natural "type 4" hair (i dont really feel like the hair typing system is real anymore, but that's a discussion for another day). I begin by getting ready to get my hair trimmed, and discussing how I initially wanted to get a silk press pixie style but a series of conversations led to a realisation that, we as a society manipulate ourselves so much and it causes a lot of friction. Trying to main sleek, straight hair goes against what my hair actually can do. Now, i want to be clear. This doesn't mean the presentation is no longer important and we should all relinquish any care, interest or discovery towards our hair and walk around with dry, unsightly head tops claiming that its natural and condemning anyone who doesn't it accept it. All it means to me is finding the nuances of how to strike a balance between presentation and preservation of our natural hair. For me, this is a curly cropped cut instead of using copious amounts of gel every single day to slick my hair down.
I feel liberated and beautiful.
