Presentation Summary: Fossils of Mississippian land plants are poorly known compared to those of the Pennsylvanian, but have notably been found on the border of the Illinois Basin, in the Valley Coal Field of southwestern Virginia, and adjacent to the Anthracite Fields of eastern Pennsylvania. Because plant remains occur as dispersed fragments in various modes of preservation, a confusing proliferation of form taxa has occurred. Nevertheless, biostratigraphically useful fossils exist.
Speaker Bio: James R. "Jim" Jennings is a native of Illinois, born and raised on Niagaran carbonates, but close to the Mazon Creek plant fossils. He received his B.A. from Southern Illinois University, his M.S. University of Illinois at Chicago Circle, and his PhD from the University of Michigan. He’s worked at Paducah Community College (of Univ. Kentucky), Eastern Kentucky University, Illinois State Geological Survey, Southern Illinois University and as a consulting geologist. He is currently "retired", but continuing research on Mississippian fossil plants.
