Data Skills Bootcamp — A Reflective Journey

A graduation presentation and reflective walkthrough

This video brings together my recorded graduation presentation and reflective commentary from a Data Skills Course with Just-IT, focusing less on individual tools and more on how my understanding of data evolved over the course of the programme.

Rather than treating data skills as a checklist of techniques, the course gradually shifted my attention toward structure, scope, and context — and how choices made early in a project shape what questions can be asked later, and how confidently insights can be interpreted.

Across the presentation, I walk through a small number of projects that became particularly meaningful learning experiences, including:

A custom-built subscription revenue dataset designed to explore how narrative, structure, and visual hierarchy influence interpretation

Python-based dataset selection and analysis, where code was used not just for charts, but to compare, validate, and interrogate datasets before committing to analysis

A geographic heatmap project using UK road fuel data, highlighting the practical constraints of spatial data and the importance of choosing appropriate tools

A larger end-to-end data platform project built locally using containerisation, object storage, orchestration, transformation, and reporting tools

Throughout, the emphasis is on process over polish — experimenting beyond the brief, surfacing assumptions early, and treating projects as opportunities to explore how data behaves under different constraints rather than simply producing outputs.

This recording is intended both as a reflection on the bootcamp itself and as a snapshot of the analytical approach I plan to carry forward beyond the course.
