On January 6th 2021, the Capitol Police fired 40 mm tear gas canisters into a crowd which was staying behind the police barriers. The incompetence of the officer firing a 40 mm round led to him firing it into his own police line. The Capitol Police then removed the barriers as their entire line was engulfed in tear gas.
