Six decades of work, 21 Tony Awards, and shows like Sweeney Todd and The Phantom of the Opera on your résumé. Not a bad way to spend a career. Still, even having been one of the brainchildren behind Damn Yankees and Evita and so many other shows, Harold Prince is humble.
Sure, his new musical, Prince of Broadway, is a retrospective of his work, but it's so much more: a nostalgic tribute to our collective musical theater. At a recent press junket for the show, which is currently running in Japan before it presumably opens on Broadway, Prince and his collaborators, a list that includes codirector Susan Stroman and cast members Ramin Karimloo, Emily Skinner, and Shuler Hensley, spoke to TheaterMania about the out-of-body experience that comes with looking back on a career well-lived.
