Bharathanaatiyam - Thillana (Brindavani) dance performance by Harshitha Rajkumar in her Salangai pooja ceremony held on May 15th, 2022.
Salangai pooja marks an important landmark in dance education. It marks the transition of the student's journey of classical dance from Beginner to Intermediate levels, by allowing them to wear the salangai, after considerate years of learning the basics of Bharathanaatiyam.
Thillana is one of the presentation styles in Bharathanaatiyam, usually presented at the end of the dance performances. In this item dancers perform together, exploring the extent of strong kinetics. This style requires exemplary skills in terms of rhythm, timing and synchronization in order to radiate the unique performance charm associated with it.
Tillana’s were composed in the late 17th and 18th century by Thanjavur (தஞ்சாவூர்) quartets, Ootthukkadu Venkata Kavi and Maharaja Swathi Thirunal and many such vidwans. Melattur Veerabhadrayyah is said to be the earliest composer of Tillana’s in the 17th century. Balamurali Krishna popularized thillana with his mesmorizing voice.
