급성편도염이란?

급성 편도염은 주로 입안 목젖 양쪽의 구개 편도에 발생하는 급성 염증을 말하고, 거의 대부분 세균이나 바이러스가 원인입니다.
이러한 급성 편도염은 일반적인 감기와 달리 갑작스럽게 발생하는 고열과 오한, 그리고 주로 삼킬 때 발생하는 인후통이 대표적인 증상 입니다. 또한 전신 근육 및 관절의 통증과 양측 목의 임파선 비대 및 통증도 흔하게 동반될 수 있습니다.
급성 편도염의 치료는 주로 환자의 증상을 줄여주는 것이 목적입니다. 상태가 심하지 않은 경우에는 소염진통제를 주 성분으로 하는 처방만으로 충분한 경우도 있습니다. 그러나, 세균 감염으로 인한 염증이 심하거나 합병증의 위험이 있는 경우에는 반드시 항생제 치료가 필요합니다.
급성 편도염은 발생 초기에 질병의 상태에 맞는 적절한 치료를 시행하면 별다른 합병증 없이 약 5일에서 10일 정도면 호전되게 됩니다.
그러나, 그렇지 않은 경우에는 단순한 급성 편도염이라도 감염 및 염증이 점차 진행되어 편도주위염증 및 농양, 심경부감염, 패혈증 등의 심각한 합병증이 발생하게 될 수 있으므로 일반적인 감기와 다르게 열과 인후통이 심한 경우에는 반드시 이비인후과에 방문하여서 진료를 하시는 것이 좋겠습니다.
급성 편도염의 예방법은 일반 감기와 크게 다르지 않습니다. 규칙적인 생활 습관 유지, 충분한 영양과 수분섭취, 자주 손씻기 등의 개인위생, 구강 위생을 위한 가글 및 양치를 자주 하는 습관들이 되겠습니다.
