Jetty Fishing For Blackfish - Tog, NJ, Early October

TARGETED SPECIES: BLACKFISH (TOG)

Decided to make a trip for Blackfish the first time this fall. Wen out with the Squad (Khoa, Aaron and Jeff) to see if we can get into some action. Decided to spilt up and fish various areas to see if we can locate some fish or if lucky, have a field day on them. I haven't fished for Blackfish in a year. Tried various spots, but it was either I didn't get a hit or caught only a few fish from those spots. I made a walk out to the "Blackfish Rock" that was green and silver and had a "Blackfish Stamp" on it. I quickly got into really heavy but most were in the 10-14 inch range, which are short fish.

I ran out of crabs and went back in to get more crabs and my first drop in, I managed to get a keeper 15 1/2 inch blackfish out of the 20+ fish I ended up catching this day. This is my first this fall. Lots of small ones throughout the tide. My friend Khoa, also got a keeper 15 1/2 incher out of the 20+ fish he caught as well. I also ended up with a surprise Triggerfish that hit a crab and a 3/0 J hook, crazy stuff!!

I get alot of questions about why I use Monofilament for Blackfish/Tog. so here's the answer:

Mono has good abrasion resistance than braided line.That stretch can actually save you from getting you line nicked off, especially if you are doing this type of fishing for tog, when jetty fishing, you line will always be in contact with sharp rocks and mussel beds. Mono can also take a beating, and less costly than replacing braided line. and Lastly, these is a better chance of not losing your rig completely when you are snagged... However, you do give up the better detection that braided line gives you. Of all types of fishing, I will only use Monofilament for Blackfish/Tog fishing.
