I rode the Kyoto-Tango Railway all the way from Maizuru in Kyoto Prefecture to Toyooka in Hyogo Prefecture. The private railway began in the 1980s, was sold to a new company in 2015, and links several of the small cities of northern Kansai. My ride, on a spectacularly moody day, ran along the coast of the Sea of Japan, over gorgeous, placid rivers, through and around lovely green mountains, and beside some rural communities, with their traditional homes and golden fields of vegetables and rice. The Kyoto-Tango Railway is famous for taking passengers to Amanohashidate, which unfortunately I couldn't see from the train. But bouncing along the line with the locals on a chilly and quiet winter morning was the most fun way to see this area anyway.
