Radiance of the Sun: Astronomy and Hallucinogens from Native California
This seminar by UCLan's Centre for Field Archaeology and Forensic Taphonomy focusing on recent research led by David Robinson's (Archaeology) AHRC funded 'Unravelling the Gordian Knot' project on Native California including new discoveries in solstice interactions with rock art and explore its relevance with hallucinogens at prehistoric painted caves in the American Far West. In partnership with Erik Knudsen (Media and Storylab) and UClan's Brendan Cassidy (Virtual Reallity) it will show interactions between the Sun and the artwork and the deeper meanings for Native Californians. The presentation will include participants from the Project's international team from France, Greece, the USA and the UK including videos and live interviews of multi-disciplinary perspective. You will learn from contemporary members of the Tejon Indian Tribe, whose ancestors' hands made this remarkable art, and hear from the land-owners who are entrusted with caring for these world class sites. We will include a demonstration of our Virtual Reality immersive platform on the complex and colourful rock paintings and how this VR platform contributes to re-connecting Native Californians to their sacred places. The presentation will be interactive, with audience members able to ask questions throughout the event.
The event will be hosted by Dr. David Robinson and Professor Erik Knudsen. Participants include,
