In this video, Matthew King plays through the first movement of Beethoven's E major Sonata, Op 109 (the first of the 3 final sonatas of Beethoven) and explains why spontaneity matters. There are some reflections on Beethoven's connection with Bach, on criticism, and on Víkingur Ólafsson's recent recording of the work. The video concludes witha short ANALYSIS of the piece. Matthew King explains Sonata Form and how this movement represents a fascinating amalgamation of form: simultaneously formal and improvisatory.
The video contains short extracts from the following movies: 'This is Spinal Tap' (1984), 'Shine' (1996) and 'Whiplash' (2014)
