This video explores a case of semantic change shared across the Romance languages, focusing on the Latin verb pensare, originally meaning “to weigh.” Already in Latin, the verb developed an abstract sense of mental evaluation, “to weigh up” or “to consider.” As Latin evolved into the Romance languages, this polysemy was resolved in an interesting way: two related forms emerged, each specialising in a different meaning. Forms like pensar came to express thought and cognition, while forms like pesar, peser, and pesare remained tied to physical weight and, in some languages, emotional burden. Drawing on evidence from Classical and Late Latin as well as early Romance texts, the video traces how metaphor, phonological change, and semantic specialisation combined to produce this enduring lexical split.
