Last summer, Daniel Spirovski, head of Audio Engineering and Sound Production at JMC Academy in Brisbane, Australia, invited me to give a workshop over Zoom. I replied by asking if I could just show up in person.
Sure, it meant traveling across the globe, but the chance to record Australian Aboriginal music with Daniel’s students was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
The performance features Jungaji, an Australian First Nations songman who sings in the Aboriginal Gugu Yalanji language. We recorded his concert around the Talking Circle at the State Library on Turrbal and Jagera land — the traditional custodians of Magandjin (Brisbane).
This session is a profound celebration of culture, language, and connection to land through music.
Kalkurr *Gugu Yalanji language
“The ability to express one’s inner feelings in Gugu Yalanji is a beautiful space & responsibility to be standing in. The feeling I get from singing this song live is one of empowerment, one of cultural identity, and to sing about Kalkurr (meaning ‘the road’), but also Kalkurr meaning the Milky Way, the stars and how vast the universe is. I have written this song from a place of being lost within the road of life and trying to find my way” - Jungaji
Wakka Wakka Woman
For Jungaji this song is a celebration of the strong matriarchs who have been stoic historically in particular his Nanny (Heather Fisher - deceased) from Cherbourg (Barambah), his mother Kathy (Kisses) Brady and all the other strong girls from past bygone days and all they’ve overcome. This song is for all our deadly black women from the many different clan groups, language groups and countries within Australia.
Gummy Bamarra *Gugu Yalanji language
Gummy (means Grandson), Bamarra (means Aboriginal story).
“Gummy Bamarra is a dedication to my grandkids and the profound impact they’ve had on my life. They unfortunately lost their father (23) four years ago. But I know intimately their father guides them & navigates the road for them in the spiritual realm. Through the song we remind them that throughout the years he walks with them, and he walks with us. - Jungaji
