Silent Hiking 160km 9 days in Austria and Italy on the Carnic Peace Trail KHW 403

Carnic Peace Trail.
My 9 day hike on the Peace Trail along the state border between Italy and Austria.
The Carnic High Trail or KHW 403 is one of the most beautiful long-distance hiking trails in Europe. The path is also part of the E10 European long-distance hiking trail. This long-distance hiking trail KHW 403 is around 160 km long and leads through a varied landscape. During the First World War, the front between Italy and Austria ran along the crest of the Carnic Alps. The traces of this mountain war are visible along the long-distance hiking trail.
This is why this trail is also called “Via della Pace” or the Carnic Peace Trail.

Those who want to hike half of the KHW 403 will find two different sections. The western part is high alpine from Sillian to the mountaineering village of Mauthen. The eastern part shows itself more from its gentle side. Here you hike across extensive alpine pastures to Thörl Maglern.
The Carnic High Trail is a pure hut hike. Camping in the mountains of Austria and Italy is prohibited. You should reserve the huts early, especially in summer.
You should be in good physical shape. This path brings you many vertical meters on uneven terrain. Technical climbing skills are not required.

1:30 Sillian - Sillianer Hütte, day 1.
I only wanted to walk a small stage to the Sillianer Hütte (2447m). That's why I traveled overnight by car to Thörl-Maglern and took the bus and train to Sillian (1080m) early. Here I chose the Heimatsteig uphill and then took the Heimkehrerkreuz (2373m) and the Helm (2433m).
Distance 10 km. Walking time with generous breaks 7.30h and 1400m uphill.

4:58 Sillianer Hütte - Obstansersee-Hütte, day 2.
With good hiking weather, I took on the summit variant. Here we went over the Hornischegg (2550m), the Hollbrucker Spitze (2580m), Demut (2591m) and the Eisenreich (2665m) to the Obstansersee-Hütte (2304m). After a finish beer, I also briefly visited the ice cave.
Distance 11.8 km. Walking time with breaks 7.30h at 850m up and 1000m down

12:49 Obstansersee-Hütte - Porzehütte, day 3.
Today I went over the Pfannenspitze (2678m) and over an easy via ferrata to the Great Kinigat (2689m). Down to the Filmoor Standschützenhütte (2350m), Heretriegel (2170m) to the Porzehütte (1942m).
Distance 13 km. Walking time with breaks 9h at 1040m up and 1410m down

19:46 Porzehütte - Hochweißsteinhaus, day 4.
According to the hiking guide, this is the queen stage, as it is a long and strenuous stage. This runs mainly on the ridge. I had cool and windy weather up there.
For me, I took the Reiterkarspitz (2421m) with me on this way to the Hochweißsteinhaus (1867m).

27:01 Hochweißsteinhaus - Wolayersee Hütte, day 5.
Today rain was announced. Over the Öfner Joch (2011m) I went towards the Untere Fleonsalm 1571m). It was way too warm, which is why I took off my rain jacket on the way. That was supposed to be a big mistake. Because when sudden heavy hail came with rain, it should only take 20 seconds to be 🫣 wet down to my underpants (by the way, the same happened to all other fellow hikers) In addition, a thunderstorm passed over me 3 times, which is not funny in the mountains. In the last hour to the Wolayerseehütte (1959m) the continuous rain remained.
Distance 17.4 km. Walking time (due to the thunderstorm with longer breaks) 8h, at 1260m up and 1100m down

30:57 Wolayersee Hütte - Zollnersee Hütte, day 6.
Today was the best weather and actually a bit too warm. I went over the Valentintörl (2148m) to the Untere Valentinalm (1220m). I also added a second stage to the Zollnersee Hütte (1738m). That's why I had a very long day today.
It went over the Plöckenhaus (1215m), the Obere Spielbodenalm (1831m), the summit cross Ködertörl (2150m) and the Obere Bischofalm (1573m) to the Zollnersee Hütte.
Distance 23.7 km. Walking time with breaks 11.15h at 1760m up and 1980m down

35:15 Zollnersee Hütte - Nassfeld, day 7.
Today I combined 2 stages again. Here I went from the Zollnersee Hütte to the Straniger Alm (1479m) and on to Nassfeld (1530m).
Distance 23.8 km. Walking time with breaks 9.45h at 1120m up and 1250m down

38:58 Nassfeld - Dolinzaalm, day 8.
And 2 merged stages again. Today I walked from Nassfeld to the Eggeralm and from the Eggeralm (1422m) to the Rifugio Nordio Deffar (1406m).
Distance 23.6 km. Walking time with breaks 10.30h at 1120m up and 1270m down

41:39 Dolinzaalm - Thörl-Maglern. day 9.
The last day went over the Feistritzer Alm (1722m) to the Bartolo Sattel (1175m), then very steeply up to the Göriacher Alm (1644m) and very steeply down again to Thörl-Maglern (634m).
Distance 19 km. Walking time with breaks 9.15h at 1030m up and 1830m down.
