Rising EV charger cable thefts. How much does it pay & end up costing to replace?

Cable theft is a big problem in the UK. Thieves chop off the cables from both public DC rapid chargers and home AC wall chargers, even though they're very little copper in them.
EV chargers in un-manned locations have given thieves a tempting opportunity to steal the cables. But how much do they actually get for scrapping in the copper? In this video I look at how much copper is inside both a public DC rapid charger cable and a home AC charging cable and how much that is worth. Cable can be sold at scrap merchants and at the time of filming (Nov 2025) the prices are around £2.10 per kg for unstripped PVC cable or £6.65 per kg for 'dry bright copper' from stripped cables. In the video I detail what thieves are making by stealing EV charger cables and how much they are costing to replace.
I also look at Instavolt's solution to battle this problem of cable theft. Instavolt are protecting their public rapid chargers by installing a security jacket over the cables. Each sheath is constructed from a tough, high-wearing and flexible material encased in an abrasion-resistant sleeve, offering physical durability and a powerful deterrent. Within this sheath is a forensic liquid which pours out when the cable is tampered with or cut. The liquid leaves a unique, traceable mark that glows under UV light and is linked to a specific location via a police-accessible database. This pioneering system has proven effective in reducing crime by enabling swift identification and prosecution.
