Physician Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia of Non-Terminal Psychiatric Patients: An Emerging Ethical Crisis
Mark Komrad, MD, teaching faculty of Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland and Tulane
Hosted by Center for Law, Ethics, and Psychiatry at CUIMC's Department of Psychiatry
Mon, Nov 15th, 2021
Dr. Komrad will discuss the emergence in several countries of physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia for patients with primarily psychiatric disorders. He will explore how these practices may challenge the fundamental ethos of what it means to be a psychiatrist. Allowing psychiatrists to help their patients commit suicide inverts the fundamental ethical framework and very definition of what it means to be psychiatrists, who typically prevent rather than facilitate suicide.
