相传古时有一条恶龙兴风作浪，摧田毁屋，为害一方。有英武少年名叫桂圆，决心为民除害。他只身与恶龙搏斗，用钢刀先刺出恶龙的左眼，在恶龙反扑时，又挖出其右眼，恶龙因流血过多而死，桂圆也因伤势过重去世。乡亲们将龙眼和桂圆埋在一起，第二年便长出两棵大树，树上结果，果核圆亮，极似龙眼。于是，称树为“龙眼树”，称果为“龙眼”
