Margaret Newman’s theory views health and illness as part of the same life process, not as opposites. According to this theory, every person is a unitary, whole being who is continuously interacting with the environment. Disease is not merely a problem to be eliminated; instead, it is a meaningful manifestation of the person’s life pattern.
The main goal of nursing in this theory is to help individuals recognize their life patterns, gain insight, and expand their consciousness. Through caring relationships, dialogue, and presence, nurses assist patients in finding meaning in their experiences, even during illness. As consciousness expands, individuals can experience personal growth, harmony, and a deeper sense of health, regardless of the presence or absence of disease.
In simple terms, Newman’s theory emphasizes that understanding life experiences leads to growth, and nursing plays a key role in supporting this awareness.
