On the first Tuesday of July, I ventured up to Chicagoland for a first Tuesday test. Since I had never heard a P-50 before, I thought now would be an ideal time to hear one myself. The original plan was to record the P-50 in Elk Grove Village, but due to a storm abruptly popping up in the area within hours of 10AM, numerous agencies started to become hesitant or unsure about testing.
To stay on the safe side, I decided to go to a P-50 in Montgomery, as I confirmed they were testing. Sam called me shortly after I left for Montgomery and mentioned that Campton Hills’ P-50 is tested rain-or-shine. I’ve always thought the slow wind up this particular unit had was super cool, so I thought to take the risk. So as a last minute decision, me and Sam went to Campton Hills, and it luckily was a success. As never hearing a P-50 until today, I was super blown away by how loud it was. People sure don’t seem to exaggerate with that statement. Around ten minutes before the test, there was full on downpour in Campton Hills, but stopped almost scarily right at 10AM, on the dot.
This by far was one of my favorite tests ever, and I was finally able to mark hearing a P-50 off of my siren related bucket list.
