Dazaifu Tenmangu is a Shinto shrine located in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It is built on the site of the grave of Sugawara Michizane, who is deified as Tenjin-sama, the kami (deity) of scholarship, learning, culture, and the arts. With over 10 million visitors annually, it is one of Japan’s most important shrines and the head of 12,000 Tenjin shrines nationwide. The shrine’s ancient grounds blend spirituality with contemporary art, making it a unique and unforgettable destination.
The Temporary Shrine at Dazaifu Tenmangu was constructed during the approximately three-year period of major renovations to the main hall. Designed by architect Sosuke Fujimoto, the temporary shrine serves as a place for rituals, prayers, and worship. It is where the divine spirit (omimata) temporarily resides during the renovation.
The roof of the temporary shrine is adorned with 46 different types of plants, including plum trees, creating a lush and green space. This unique structure provides a tranquil setting for visitors to connect with the spiritual essence of Dazaifu Tenmangu.
Once the renovations to the main hall are complete, the temporary shrine will fulfill its purpose and be dismantled. The trees on the roof will be transplanted to the Tenjin Forest, continuing their existence and contributing to the shrine’s legacy.
