How Can There Be So Much Peace?
After months of surgeries, treatments, setbacks, and hospital stays, we reached a point we never wanted to face — realizing that Nancy was not going to get better.
In this video, I share what the first six months after the diagnosis were really like. The hope, the setbacks, and the constant changes that made this season so unpredictable. There were moments when Nancy regained strength — walking with a cane, getting out on the boat — and moments when everything shifted again.
I talk about the July 4th weekend when Nancy suddenly became disoriented and weak, the plans for radiation that were cancelled, and the MRI that showed significant tumor progression. What followed were long hospital stays, complications from treatment, emergency admissions, and weeks of uncertainty.
Nancy spent three weeks in inpatient rehab, working incredibly hard to regain strength while dealing with paralysis on one side of her body. During that time, we began to face the reality that walking, driving, and independence might never fully return.
We also share the personal losses that came during those months — a niece’s wedding, the passing of Nancy’s mother, and the birth of our first grandchild — all moments we couldn’t attend because Nancy was in the hospital.
After the most recent MRI showed continued progression, the medical team agreed there were no more treatment options available. Chemotherapy was no longer possible. Surgery would only take more from Nancy. Clinical trials weren’t an option. And Nancy made the calm, courageous decision to focus on quality of life and call hospice.
People often ask how there can be so much peace in the middle of all of this. The only honest answer is our faith. Nancy is certain of her eternity, and we trust that only God knows how many days any of us truly have.
