Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a mood disorder, like Major Depressive Disorder.
It is characterized by extreme changes in mood, energy, and concentration. The two opposite states are called manic (or hypomanic) episodes and depressive episodes. These episodes last for extended periods, and symptoms are present most of the day, nearly every day.
A manic episode is defined as a period of at least one week of abnormally elevated or irritable mood and high energy. During mania, a person may feel like they can accomplish anything, talk or move very quickly, sleep very little without feeling tired, or engage in risky behaviors. In more severe cases, they may develop grandiose beliefs, such as thinking they are invincible or unusually powerful. These symptoms can lead to serious complications, especially when the episode is prolonged.
A hypomanic episode is similar but shorter and less severe, lasting at least four days. It does not usually cause major impairment, but it can still disrupt life.
A depressive episode, which lasts at least two weeks, is marked by very low energy, loss of concentration, and feelings of hopelessness. A person may struggle with even simple daily tasks, experience changes in sleep and appetite, withdraw socially, and lose interest in things they once enjoyed. The symptoms of a depressive episode overlap significantly with Major Depressive Disorder, the most common form of depression.
It is important to note that after a manic or hypomanic episode, some people may transition into a depressive episode, while others may return to a stable mood
