The American Civil War practically tore this country in two, to the part that, in order to finance the war between then, both sides had to create a fiat currency which neither side could back up at the time. When the Confederacy lost, their money had become fully as worthless as the old Continental Currency of the 1770's, and for strikingly similar reasons, despite their different outcomes as nations declaring their independence from England (which was won) and their independence from the Union States of the North (which was lost). The Union's currency, though it also lost some value relative to the gold it was meant to represent, would eventually be restored to full par value by 1879.
The notes of both sides are presented, authentic Union notes of $1 to $20, simulated (reproduction, copy) of $50 to $1000, and authentic Confederate notes of $1 to $500.
