After many years of fighting to balance both sides of himself, Mark Ruffalo is back to find out how far Bruce Banner will go as the Grey Hulk emerges, a cunning, morally ambiguous persona that is everything the Green Hulk is not, trading brute force for calculated brutality and urban intelligence. By suppressing his rage for so long, Bruce finds out that it does not disappear but instead turns cold and becomes something much worse, and that it shows itself most clearly when his control over the monster is at its weakest point. As Harrison Ford's Thaddeus Ross deals with his own gamma-related issues, he sees the potential for this new Hulk to be more frightening than the mindless creature he has been chasing for so long due to the fact that intelligence added to the strength of the Hulk gives it the opportunity to become an apex predator operating outside of the moral compass of Bruce Banner. This is interesting to think about because it allows us to look at the psychological horror of Bruce coming to realize that he is becoming the exact monster that he was terrified of — a monster who takes pleasure in violence and uses power without the violent rage of the green Hulk or the control of Bruce.

It is visually stunning and the design of the grey Hulk is significantly different than his green cousin. He is a leaner and more strategic fighter than his larger and more powerful green counterpart. In addition, he operates in the shadows like a predator, using stealth to move undetected and then attacking when he least expects to be seen. In this way, the grey Hulk is able to operate in the underworld of Las Vegas where he works as an enforcer and problem solver in secret. This creates the question of whether Bruce is even aware of these nighttime activities or if they represent a complete fracture in his psyche that no longer allows him to integrate his dual natures. Harrison Ford brings weight to Ross as he grapples with whether to stop this new threat or utilize it for missions that require deniable assets with superhuman abilities and flexible ethical standards. The film is a multi-personality disorder examination through a superhero lens and explores what occurs when your alternate personality develops its own identity that is independent of your conscious self and begins to make decisions that are counter to everything you believe. The film will include the use of noir-influenced visuals with graphic and personal violence; a sense of psychological tension as Bruce seeks to understand his blackout periods and learn the disturbing truth about them; and finally, a conclusion that asks the question of whether there are certain aspects of ourselves that are too dangerous to acknowledge, let alone control. The film represents Hulk as a psychological thriller examining the monsters we develop when we do not deal with our emotional trauma honestly.
