Navadurga refers to the nine forms of Goddess Durga, who is one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. These nine forms are worshipped during the festival of Navaratri, which is a nine-night celebration dedicated to the goddess. Each night of Navaratri is devoted to one of the nine forms of Durga, and devotees offer prayers, fasting, and rituals during this period.
Here are the nine forms of Navadurga:
Shailaputri: She is the daughter of the mountain, depicted riding a bull, with a trident and a lotus in her hands. She represents the power of creation and the purity of the mind.
Brahmacharini: This form represents the ascetic and celibate aspect of Durga. She is depicted as a young woman holding a rosary and a water pot. Brahmacharini symbolizes devotion, penance, and spiritual progress.
Chandraghanta: She has a crescent moon on her forehead and rides a lion. She is the symbol of courage and strength. Her image inspires fearlessness and the elimination of evil.
Kushmanda: This form of Durga is often depicted with eight arms and holding a variety of weapons. Kushmanda is believed to be the creator of the universe and the one who dispels darkness and evil.
Skandamata: Skandamata is the mother of Lord Skanda (Kartikeya), the warrior god. She is depicted with her son in her lap and is known for her nurturing and protective qualities. This form is associated with motherhood and devotion.
Katyayani: Katyayani is depicted as a warrior goddess riding a lion. She is associated with power, determination, and strength. Her worship is said to remove all obstacles and grants the power to destroy evil.
Kaalratri: This form is fierce and powerful. Kaalratri represents destruction and the annihilation of evil forces. She is often depicted with a dark complexion, disheveled hair, and a frightening appearance. She is known for her power to destroy the most evil entities.
Mahagauri: Mahagauri is the goddess of purity and beauty. She is depicted as a serene and peaceful figure, symbolizing peace, calm, and the removal of suffering. Her worship is said to bring happiness and success.
Siddhidhatri: The final form of Durga, Siddhidhatri is the goddess of perfection, wisdom, and the bestower of all types of siddhis (divine powers). She is usually depicted sitting on a lotus with four hands and is believed to grant both spiritual and material fulfillment.
These forms of Durga represent the different facets of feminine power—creation, preservation, destruction, and protection. Each form has its own significance, and the worship of these nine forms is an important tradition during Navaratri, which usually falls in September or October, depending on the lunar calendar.
