On March 26th, 1979, the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed. With US President Jimmy Carter at the center of the negotiations, the Peace Treaty brought normalization between Israel and Egypt. After heavy negotiations in 1977, the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The Treaty primary focus included joint recognition of both states, as well as cessation of territory taken/lost during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948. The Treaty made Egypt the first Arab State to officially recognize Israel and brought normalization between the two nations, as well as tremendous military financial aid from the US to Egypt. The Treaty was not received positively by other Arab states. After the signing, Egypt was suspended from the Arab League and had all diplomatic connections with Syria severed. In 1981, President Sadat was assassinated by members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Although many Egyptian politicians would later criticize the Peace Treaty in the early 2010’s, Egypt would continue to maintain peace with Israel.
