Underwater Sculpture Park for MoBay!!! ● E4 ‎@montegobaymarineparktrust8680 

On Saturday October 23 the resort city of Montego Bay received the first of many sculptures that will be apart of Jamaica’s first Underwater Sculpture Park to be deployed at a later date.

The sculpture will serve as an artificial reef and in turn become somewhat of a nursery for marine creatures. The texture of the sculpture makes it easy for coral polyps to attach to it. The depth at which it will be placed will also encourage growth of the marine life in that area. And guess what? This is the first of many to come.

Similar Projects Across the World

The world’s first under water Sculpture Park is the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park, which was constructed in 2006 by the artist Jason deCaires Taylor. Since then there have been many others Like the Breef Coral Reef Sculpture Garden in Bahamas, GRAND CAYMAN’S AMPHITRITE, THE MUSEO SUBACUÁTICO DE ARTE (MUSA) in Mexico just to name a few.

Coral reefs provide a home to over 25 percent of marine species. Coral reefs attract so much biodiversity that they are often referred to as the rainforests of the sea. Unfortunately they are being depleted because of climate change, natural disasters, pollution, overfishing and even tourism. Like other underwater sculpture parks this one will support the growth of natural coral reefs rather than harming them.
