Competing Approaches to Judicial Interpretation

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett and Israel Supreme Court Justice Alex Stein visited Notre Dame Law School on Tuesday, January 23. They engaged in a discussion on "Competing Approaches to Legal Interpretation–A Conversation Between Justices” at 12:30 p.m. in the Law School’s McCartan Courtroom. The conversation was moderated by Professor of Law William Kelley.

Justice Barrett earned her J.D. from Notre Dame Law School in 1997, graduating first in her class. In 2002, she joined the Law School faculty as a professor of law, where her expertise included the areas of federal courts, constitutional law, and statutory interpretation. In 2017, she was appointed as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. She remained a Notre Dame Law School faculty member and continued to teach part time after her judicial appointment. She was confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court in October 2020.

Justice Stein has served as a justice of the Israeli Supreme Court since 2018. He was previously a professor of law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Cardozo School of Law, and Brooklyn Law School. He has also held visiting professor roles at Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Oxford. His expertise includes torts, evidence, medical malpractice, and economic analysis of law. Justice Stein holds LL.B. and LL.M. degrees from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a Ph.D. from the University of London.
