WEST LINDSEY PARISH #97: THORESWAY

Welcome to the first of two West Lindsey villages which contain the name Thor – and if you’re now thinking of the big Norse bloke with the hammer, you are right do so. Thoresway literally means “Shrine or temple of Thor”. It was first recorded in the Domesday Book as Toreswe and then as Thoresweie in the Gilbertine charter of 1187. Its unsurprising then, that given this piece of Scandinavian information, Thoresway is believed to belong to an early phase of Danish settlement. Its highly likely anyway, because after all, Lincolnshire does contain the highest proportion of Danish placenames anywhere in the UK.

Thoresway’s history is quite complex. Whilst its now just a simple village laid out along one road, historically that wasn’t necessarily the case. There are several patches of earthworks around the village, indicating it was once much larger. Its decline in population is widely attributed to the Black Death.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Thoresway would be its location. The Lincolnshire Wolds are mostly dry hills, but Thoresway has plentiful springs. These would aid local industry in the 18th and 19th centuries, and you can still see one remnant in particular from that time on the main street – a wheelhouse – which still has its original waterwheel!
