**𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆**
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀
Capodimonte is the heir of the ancient Vesentum, an important Etruscan Umbrian city, whose vast necropolis has brought to light numerous archaeological finds, some of which are considered true art treasures of the Neolithic age - Villanovan, Etruscan and Roman, currently on display in museums in Rome, Florence and Viterbo.

Destroyed in 280 BC, the Roman Visentium was re-founded, which soon became a municipality and diocese from the earliest times of Christianity.
Destroyed again by the Lombards in the mid-8th century, its population was dispersed.

Part of them found refuge to the east on the promontory and formed the first nucleus of Capodimonte, which became a parish in 1102. Another group instead preferred to rebuild on the rubble creating the medieval Castle of Bisenzio.

Capodimonte was then subjected to the lords of Bisenzio in the 11th century, to the Municipality of Orvieto in the 13th century, to the Episcopal seat of Montefiascone in 1369, to the Farnese Lordship of the Duchy of Castro in 1385 and to the Church from 1649 until the advent of the Kingdom of Italy in 1870.

The Farnese family, in the 16th century built, by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, the imposing octagonal mass, called Rocca, on a previous construction of the Lords of Bisenzio.

The palace became their favorite seat, as well as a coveted place, numerous Pontiffs, sovereigns, artists and politicians, both Italian and foreign, stayed there extolling its magnificence.

Then other monuments were built: in a panoramic position, almost close to the Rocca, the Collegiate Church of S. Maria Assunta, and the Borghese Palace, currently the town hall, and the Puniatowski del Valadier palace, all of which represent the ancient medieval village. Today it's a touristic town.
