Type II Cepheids are powerful distance indicators and excellent tracers of old stellar populations. They have already been employed to measure distances and map the three-dimensional structure of the Magellanic Clouds.
With Rubin LSST, we will be able to detect and characterize Type II Cepheids not only in Local Group galaxies but also at distances of several Mpc. This will allow us to use them as independent calibrators of the cosmic distance scale. To achieve this, we plan to adopt locally calibrated period–luminosity–metallicity relations, which require both precise photometry and spectroscopic metallicities. Rubin LSST will provide the optical photometry, while near-infrared data will come from space missions such as Euclid or Roman. WST, with its sensitivity and multiplexing capabilities, will play a crucial role by providing the spectroscopic abundances. This synergy will establish Type II Cepheids as robust alternative standard candles for extragalactic distance measurements.
