I just finished Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness, and it’s easy to see why this 1969 Hugo and Nebula Award winner is considered essential science fiction. In this review, I discuss Le Guin’s phenomenal worldbuilding, the novel’s groundbreaking approach to gender and sexuality, the political systems of Gethen, and the powerful relationship between Genly Ai and Estraven. I also talk about where this fits in the Hainish Cycle and how it compares to other classic sci-fi like Dune and Hyperion.
