The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is traditionally chanted 108 times, ideally twice a day—once at sunrise and once at sunset. This powerful mantra, dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as Mrityunjaya (the conqueror of death), originates from the Rig Veda and is regarded as one of the most profound mantras for meditation, healing, and inner transformation.
Often called the Great Death-Conquering Mantra, it holds a sacred place among spiritual practices for contemplation, protection, and deep awareness.
Mantra:
Om Tryambakam Yajamahe
Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan
Mrityor Mukshiya Mamritat
The Story Behind the Mantra
According to ancient tradition, Lord Shiva appeared before his devotee Markandeya, who was destined to die at the age of sixteen. Through the divine power of the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and Shiva’s blessing, Markandeya was freed from death itself, and his aging was halted just days before his destined time. Because of this, the mantra is also known as the Markandeya Mantra, symbolizing victory over fear, decay, and mortality.
