When we moved over to the U.K. from Maryland in 2018, we intended to live in Petersfield, a small but vibrant market town in the county of Hampshire about an hour south of London. As things turned out, we ended up in a village some five miles outside of Petersfield, but still find ourselves going into the town almost on a daily basis! For us, and about 40,000 other people, it is a commercial center, and a vital hub. Our kids go/went to school in Petersfield, we shop in Petersfield, and also take the train from there to get to London and other parts of Britain. It's useful, and historic, dating back to the 11th century and the Norman invasion. Originally, it was where farmers and other traders gathered to sell produce, livestock, and other wares. Even today, the town square is filled with vendors two days a week. Eventually, the town became a stopping off point for folks traveling between London and the south coast, and so hotels and pubs sprung up. Today, the buildings and businesses run the gamut: supermarkets, restaurants, pubs, clothing shops, book stores, boutiques, salons, etc. All in all, it is a fascinating mix of old and new, and surely offers something of interest to everyone.
