Ken Shapiro’s The Groove Tube coasted on the backs of Mad Magazine and in particular National Lampoon—so popular in the early 70s it produced a comedy revue starring Chevy Chase called Lemmings. Chase is one of the stars of Shapiro’s amiable 1974 satire which has the hit and miss quality of so many other sketch comedies. Richard Belzer co-stars along with Shapiro who apparently had his finger on the pulse of America… or at least its dorm rooms; The Groove Tube cost $200,000 and raked in $9 million at the box office.
