Dialogue from the famous scene from the highly acclaimed movie A Few Good Men (1992). Jack Nicholson is the Colonel. Tom Cruise is the Lawyer
Lawyer: "Colonel Jessup, did you order the Code Red?!" ...
Colonel: "You want answers?"
Lawyer: "I think I'm entitled to them!"
Colonel: "You want answers?"
Lawyer: "I want the truth!"
Colonel: "You can't handle the truth!! ... I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!"
Lawyer: "Did you order the Code Red?"
Colonel: "I did the job ..."
Lawyer: "Did you order the Code Red?!?!"
Colonel: "You're God-Damn right I did!!"
The room goes silent. The lawyer is stunned. No one is ready for the truth even though they suspect it. In the movie, the lawyer played on the Colonel’s ego strength and got him to confess. But no one was ready for it! It was a closely guarded military secret and now it was out. The Code of Honor was broken.
Can we handle secrets revealed today? What’s up with “Area 51, the murders of JFK, RFK, MLK?” Is the CIA more powerful than the President, Congress and the Senate combined? Is there a dark underbelly of the governments? Is there a world cabal, an unseen hand manipulating us and all our politicians? Can we handle the truth and what exactly is true? A Course in Miracles has a very different idea of truth.
President Abraham Lincoln was a firm believer in the people. “If given the truth," he said, "they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts.” It was an honorable intention. But what is real? Decades later, someone thought otherwise. People will panic. Don’t tell them! They can’t handle the truth.
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (Bible:John.14.6) Jesus made it sound so simple. Just recite a few words, thought the church people. Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and you are saved!
And even more puzzling is the ACIM line “... that only the truth is true.” (WkBk.66.13) What does that mean? It’s like saying only blue is bluish. Does it describe blue?
Long before A Course in Miracles was inspired, philosophers had a sneaky suspicion we were creating a strange existence. “We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality.” - Iris Murdoch (Irish Novelist and Philosopher) Should I travel the world to find what is real, what is true, or should I follow the Course: “Let me be still and listen to the truth.” (WkBk.106)
