Old St Paul's is a gorgeous wooden church dating from 1866, and was the first church in New Zealand to possess a ring of bells. The old bells, a Warner three, gradually fell into disrepair and then were taken out of the church to be used at the current cathedral which was under construction. All that was left was a broken change ringing mechanism. However, in 1979 a new ring of 5 bells, with a tenor of 3-3-25 in Eb, was cast and hung in the church, now owned by the Government. They sound absolutely fabulous but are barely rung, with the odd quarter attempt and weddings being the only times they are sounded. They go well but are made difficult by the combination of light bells + long draught.
There has been talk of an augmentation to 6 but this has yet to come to fruition.
