Ahn Jung-geun: Fighting for Korean Independence (Korean History)

In this video, I will discuss the life and achievements of Ahn Jung-geun (also spelled An Jung-geun or Ahn Joong-keun) (1879-1910), a Korean independence activist who dedicated his life to making Korea independent from Imperial Japan. He is most famous for his assassination of Ito Hirobumi 伊藤 博文, an important Japanese politician. Ito Hirobumi was the first prime-minister of Japan and the first resident-general of Korea. This event is remembered in Korea as the “Patriotic Deed in Harbin” (안중근 의사 하얼빈 의거).

First, I will discuss Ahn Jung-geun’s early life. Ahn Jung-geun was a catholic and his faith led his actions for most of his life. His catholic name was Thomas (도마).

Next, I will discuss important events in Korean history during these times like the the signing of the Eulsa Treaty 을사조약 and the Russo-Japanese war. I’ll follow this with a short history of Ito Hirobumi and his importance in Japanese history.

This will be followed by a discussion about important events in Ahn Jung-geun’s life prior to his actions in Harbin, notably joining a Righteous Army Group (의병 / 창의군) in Vladivostok and his guerilla warfare activities in the North Hamgyeong Province (함경북도). Ahn Jung-geun formed the Donguidanjihoe (동의단지회) with 11 comrades where he cut off his ring finger on his left hand.

Then, I will talk about Ito Hirobumi’s assassination, Ahn Jung-geun’s trial and death sentence.

Finally, I’ll discuss Ahn Jung-geun’s writings and his importance in the Korean Independence Movement. His calligraphic works are very popular in Korea and his handprint is recognized all over Korea up to this day.
