Bark & Nstable - Halo | Hardware live session with Elektron machines and modular system

Summer session played live and multitrack recorded and mixed thru the console at Le Studio des Petites Roches, France.

The song is called Halo and was composed by electronic music producers Bark and Nstable.

The track is built around a hypnotic bassline, mixed with luminous synths and evolving pads, all sustained by a solid techno beat.

During the performance, Nstable takes care of shaping tones from his modular system while Bark has to lead the drum section and synth pads.

Gear used :

Drums : Elektron Digitakt and Analog Rytm.
Detuned pad : Dreadbox Erebus v3, using two notes paraphony.
Sustained pad : Korg Minilogue XD using slow attack enveloppe and glide.
Melodic Lead : Dave Smith Instrument Evolver.

Modular :

Deep Bassline : Instruō Cš-L - AJH Synth MiniMod Transistor Ladder Filter - Intellijel Quad VCA.
Distorted effect : "Deep Bassline" - WMD TRSHMSTR - WMP DPLR.
Arpegated Bassline : SSF ZPO - Befaco STMix - SSF Stereo Dipole - Xaoc Devices Tallin - Shakmat Modular Gemini's Path.
Modulations : Xaoc Devices (Batumi, Zadar), Intellijel (Dual ADSR, Quadrax).
FX : Erica Synths Black Hole DSP.


All synths lines are midi sequenced with Octatack and Digitakt (Polyend Poly2 as midi to cv module).


Record and Mix method :

Each sound goes thru the small fader section of the Audient ASP 8024, to be routed to AD converters, and multitrack recorded in Protools.
The mix down consists of using a little bit of processing in the box, like compression on drum, reverb and delay on synths.
Then, each track is going back to the console (on the long fader), to be equalized and summed in the mix bus.
Finally, a vca compression is applied on this master bus, for gluing the mix, and also a transparent limiter to protect from clipping.
