Why They Torture People in Russia

This fall we faced another evidence of torture happening in Russia in huge numbers. Gulagu.net project has published a video of Russian prisoners being beaten up and sexually abused in prison. You can learn more about these videos from the project and from BBC and Ksenia Sobchak channels.

However, the video hasn’t attracted a lot of public attention. One of the reasons is that many people find it difficult to feel sorry for the prisoners.

The thing is that torture is a threat even for those who have never been to prison and never had any legal issues. In Russia you can be minding your business in the morning and in the evening you are tied to a chair at a police station. Next morning you would confess to a crime that you have never committed.

In this episode we would talk about innocent people being tortured by Russian policemen.

How and why are they torturing people? How can people recover from it? Who has been trying to stop it for many years? Is there any chance that this lawlessness would be reduced?
